A Little Information About Pulau Ubin
Pulau Ubin, shaped like a boomerang, is located just off the north-eastern corner of mainland Singapore. It was once a group of five smaller islets separated by tidal rivers, but it has since been joined by the construction of bunds for prawn farming to form a single 1,020-hectare island. Pulau Ketam (Crab Island) and Pulau Sekudu (Frog Island) are two other islets to its south.
Granite mining employed a few thousand people in the early days. Much of the original vegetation was destroyed to make way for the cultivation of rubber and other crops such as coffee, pineapple, coconut, and jasmine. Today, abandoned granite quarries stand as picturesque relics of Ubin’s history, while forests and grasslands have grown back to hide the ravages of the past.
