Why Shiok Hokkien Mee Bedok Is One Of The Best Hokkien Prawn Mee Singapore:
- The wok hei flavour is strong, the prices are quite reasonable especially considering that the shop is in a coffee shop not too far from Bedok Central.
Shiok Hokkien Mee (previously known as YouFu Hokkien Mee) has recently rebranded and has opened a second branch in Bedok!
We have eaten at the shop many times at the Golden Mile branch, and last week was our first time at their Bedok branch.
We ordered a large plate, and it costs $10 for a large portion. We also added an extra portion of eggs which costed us 80 cents.
After the young man at the counter took our order, we were given a buzzer and were told to wait for the cook to fry up the Hokkien Mee. After 7 minutes or so of waiting, the buzzer buzzed and we went to collect the Hokkien Mee.
We were pleasantly surprised to see that the Hokkien Mee was served hot and fresh. It was still steaming with smoke, which was great because you know it has been cooked fresh.
It was a wet type of Hokkien Mee. Which we liked quite a lot as it is slightly easier to eat and it was able to trap the flavour of the wok hei.
We sat down to enjoy our large plate of Hokkien Mee. The noodles were cooked mainly mixed with yellow noodles and bee hoon. The eggs were well stir-fried together with the noodles. It was evenly cooked. The noodles absorbed the umami prawn broth very well and we could clearly taste the “wok-hei” fragrance without being overbearing and being cooked at the perfect level of wok hei with the great flavour that we expect from Hokkien Mee. The prawns were plump, sweet and tasted fresh. The squids were chewy and well cooked. The lean pork belly was delicious too. The chili they gave at the side was a great addition.
And they do have crunchy pork lard, so please do request for it if you want to elevate the taste of your Hokkien Mee to the next level!
By adding the pork lard, it gives a good crunchy bite to it. It tasted really good when it was eaten together with the Hokkien Mee!
Our review: 5/5 stars for the strong wok-hei and strong umami taste with great portions for its price together with its convenient location near Bedok Central!
